KARACHI: At least 80 tonnes of relief cargo is dispatched daily to flood victims in various parts of Sindh province by Pakistan Army from its Central Ordnance Depot (COD).
“The COD receives relief goods from four camps set up in the city and sends them to various destinations after proper packing as per requirement of each family,” said Dy. Commandant, COD, Karachi, Col. Nauman Gul.
A news agency quotes him as saying on Wednesday that besides, Army personnel, the students of University of Karachi and other private sector institutions were providing assistance in packing of the relief goods.
He said that a minimum 100 to 120 tonnes of relief goods was being received to average per day at the COD from where 12 to 14 trucks carry out the goods to flood affectees in Sukkur, Thatta, Sewhan, Sujjawal, Dadu and other areas in interior of Sindh.
Col. Nauman said that goods transported via road weigh 36 kg each packet while that distributed via helicopters weigh 5 to 6 kgs.
He said that the relief items comprise of flour, rice, sugar, tea, dry milk, ghee, grams, salt, chillies, mineral water and biscuits.
Besides, the local community, he said the relief goods were also being received from countries like China, Canada, Sharjah, Saudi Arabia and other Muslims countries in large number.
