Gold Cup Hockey Tournament commences

LAHORE: The Gold Cup Hockey Tournament started at Faisalabad Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. Ten teams, divided into two pools, are taking part in the event. Pool A comprises of National Bank Pakistan (NBP), Pakistan Customs, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Ordinance Factory (POF) and Higher Education Commission (HEC) while Pool has Pakistan WAPDA, Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Punjab, Pakistan Police and Port Qasim Authority. Three matches were played on the opening day. In the first match, HEC beat POF 3-2. HEC: Muhammad Imran Khan (15th minute), Rashid Minhas (38th minute), Abad Ali (59th minute). POF: Shahbaz (6th minute), Naseer Ahmad (20th minute). Police downed PQA 1-0. Police: Irfan (34th minute). NBP defeated Customs in the last match of the day. Earlier, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president Qasim Zia inaugurated the tournament. Present on the occasion were PHF secretary general Muhammad Asif Bajwa, tournament director Khalid Bashir, organising secretary Rana Mujahid Ali and many former Olympians.
