SUKKUR: The flood peak passed through Guddu Barrage without causing any considerable damage on Wednesday.
It may be mentioned that the capacity of Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri barrages is 1.25 million cusecs, 900,000 cusecs and 850,000 cusecs respectively.
According to Irrigation authorities, a few areas between Sukkur and Guddu Barrage are inundated by the floodwater.
The safety of banks and protective wall of Sukkur Barrage is being monitored by Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy, rangers, police as well as Irrigation officials round the clock.
At the moment, 10 gates of the Sukkur Barrage have been closed. The Irrigation authorities said that these gates could be immediately opened for water discharge in case the need arises.
District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sukkur Inamullah Dharejo apprised about coordination mechanism. He said Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and the district government officials have set up permanent camps in Sukkur to cope with the flood situation, adding that Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) was the focal agency for coordination and its round-the-clock control room was also active in this regard. There is also coordination with the armed forces and their support system is also ready, he added.
While talking to newsmen here on Wednesday, he said a team of Pakistan Navy with 20 boats had already reached Sukkur and other areas to meet any need of evacuation. The Sindh government has put 155 boats and 50 dewatering sets on the disposal of the Pakistan Army, he added.
He also said there should be 100 percent evacuation in the vulnerable low-lying areas. Those living in the areas outside the protective bunds near the river belt should also be on the alert.
To a question, DCO said that until Wednesday, up to 80 percent evacuation had been carried out from the "katcha" areas and the process was being speeded up.
According to DCO Kashmore, Syed Abid Ali Shah 30 relief camps have been established while 10,000 people shifted to safer places. He said that local landlords were fully cooperating with the government.
Giving details in this regard, DCO Ghotki Abdul Aziz Uqaili said that about 8,000 people had voluntarily shifted to safer places while 1,300 moved through government arrangements.
